The entitlement to past due benefits is dependent on several factors. One factor is the type of social security disability you have filed for. If you’ve applied for SSD, which is the kind of social security you get if you have paid sufficient funds into the system, you are entitled to back benefits going back up to 12 months prior to the date that you filed your application. If you file your application January 1 of 2016, but you were disabled 3 years before, you’re entitled to back benefits going back to January of 2015, which is 1 year earlier. For SSI ( another name for welfare), which is not based on payments into the social security system through payroll deductions, the benefits payable from the date of the application – there are no retroactive benefits, irrespective of when the disability began.
