The test under social security isn’t necessarily how long you’ve been disabled. The question is do you have a disability that (A) has lasted twelve months or more or, (B) is likely to last twelve months or more, which is a medical question. You can apply on day one of the disability if yours is a disability that is likely to last for more than twelve months. For example, if you have an amputation of a limb, you know that condition will continue beyond twelve months, but there are many less obvious conditions that will last in excess of twelve months. That’s the test, not the duration itself.
