The social security administration is going to go back a certain period of time, or it won’t, depending on what kind of Social Security you’re applying for. If you apply for SSDI which is the regular Social Security, the one that you get based on past earnings that you’ve paid into the system, they will go back up to one year from your date of filing. If you file January 1, 2016, and are found to be disabled, they will go back to January of 2015. The downside is if you were disabled for several years, you’re going to lose those old years. You’re only going to go back one year, so make sure that you file promptly. For SSI which is the welfare kind of Social Security, they will only pay from the date of filing. There are no retroactive benefits.
