There is no specific period within which social security has to be applied for. However, if you are applying for SSDI, which is the regular social security disability based on contributions you’ve made into the social security system, they will only go back one year for back benefits from the date of your application. If you became disabled in 2000 and you file your claim in 2016, you’ve lost 14 years or 15 years of disability benefits. If you believe you are disabled don’t wait, file your claim. If you are not sure if to whether your claim is a good claim or what your probabilities are of winning, get a good opinion from an attorney who is experienced in this area.
