How long does an application for Social Security disability take and what are the steps?

Transcription
The initial application for social security, whether it’s for SSD, which is based on contributions you’ve made to the system or for SSI which is the welfare kind, the process of filing is the same. You either can file through the social security website, ssa.gov, or you can go to a social security office and make the application. What they will do is they’ll gather all of your medical records. Medical records are extremely important in a social security case. They’ll also gather all of your past employment records. They may also send you out for a consultative examination with a doctor .If you claim that you have a herniated disk and pain going to your leg, one would think they would send you to a orthopedist or a spinal surgeon. The fact is they’ll send you to a doctor but that doctor could be a dermatologist. That doesn’t make any sense but that’s just the way the process works. Ordinarily, to make a determination on the initial application can take anywhere between three and six months.
