Sometimes you can find a friendly lawyer you can call. In our firm, we take calls from individuals who are wondering whether or not they are entitled to social security, and very often, I triage them out over the phone and tell them what their chances are and what they need to do. If one feels that they have become disabled to a point where they can no longer work, they need to file a claim. That can be done either directly online through ssa.gov, or you can go to the Social Security Office, and they will assist you with that claim. They will gather your medical records, your employment history, and have them reviewed by some specialists or so-called “specialists,” and make a determination at the initial level as to whether you are disabled.
