As a rule, disability benefits will not Affect your retirement benefits. If an individual becomes disabled at age 55 and social security finds that they are disabled, they will essentially get exactly the same amount they would’ve gotten at age 66 and retirement, except they’re going to move it back to age 55 as opposed to age 66. When the disabled individual gets to age 66, they continue to get the disability checks in the same amount as they did originally plus cost of living, but now they are reclassified as retirement benefits, so the former disability benefits now become retirement benefits but the amount is exactly the same.
