Social security disability, SSD, is based on contributions that the disabled person has made into the system. That person can be Donald Trump and have billions of dollars, and still get his SSD. He’s paid for it, and therefore it’s his if he is disabled.
On the other hand, if you apply for SSI which is a form of welfare, you can have no more than $2,000 of assets if you’re an individual, or $3,000 if you are married or in a recognized partnership relationship. Under those circumstances, if you have $10,000 of assets and you’re applying for SSI, you will not get SSI even if you’re disabled. They will require that you will have spent 8,000 of the 10,000 to take you down to the $2,000 level. Also, you can’t give it away as a gift, they want you to spend it on legitimate expenses.
